MSS Kawasaki Selected by Damien Byrne
As the new Adelaide Masters Series approaches, Ireland’s top short circuit riders are firming up their 2014 plans and Kilkenny’s Damien Byrne is the latest to announce a major assault on the Superbike class, with the news that he will run an MSS Kawasaki ZX10 in the series.
Supported by Motorcycle Insurance Specialists, Adelaide Insurance Services, the series has grown to the point where 2014 will see the biggest field of Superbikes since the series inception in 2011, line-up for the season opener on April 5th & 6th.
Damien Byrne has been one of the stalwarts of the Superbike class since the Adelaide Masters Series began and produced his most competitive season yet in 2013, to finish as runner-up to Derek Sheils. Having taken numerous podiums and pole positions with his ageing and underpowered Honda Fireblade, Byrne has taken the decision to step up his efforts to lift the Masters title by running new machinery this season.
The Kawasaki that the Castlecomer man will campaign this year has been built by famed Kawasaki specialists and British Superbike Championship team, MSS Kawasaki. The machine will run with support from the team and will appear in MSS colours. Damien collected the bike from the teams Colchester base a couple of weeks ago and is now looking forward to getting it out on track.
Damien gave his thoughts on his new mount, saying; “I’m really excited about the season ahead. After running the Fireblade for so long, it will be a bit different moving onto the Kawasaki, but the extra horsepower will be very welcome. I have just a couple of days testing arranged before the season starts, but I’m confident that MSS have given me a good base set-up and it should now only take a little bit of fine tuning to get the bike working the way I want it.”
Byrne’s assault on the Adelaide Masters Superbike title will see him tackle fourteen races over five events, four at Mondello Park and one at Bishopscourt, starting on April 5th & 6th. Backing for his title challenge comes from Megabikes, X-Lite Helmets, SB Maintenance, Southside Motor Factors, JTEC Sports, MCM Engineering and Chex Nous Montessori.

and two of the Adelaide Insurance Promotional ladies at the launch of the Adelaide Masters Series
Former double Adelaide Masters Series champion Brian McCormack, will make a full time return to the series for 2014 having put together his own team.
The Waterford man will race at all Adelaide Masters Series events with the aim of winning back his crown and breaking the Kawasaki dominance of the grid, riding his newly acquired Honda Fireblade. The possible addition of a Supersport machine could see him also chase that series and a second double winning season.
Having concentrated on a road racing programme in 2013 with only occasional circuit outings ‘Big Mac’ will this year return to the Adelaide Insurance Services backed Adelaide Masters Series full time. 2012 was the last time that the Tramore native was regularly seen at the front of the Masters grids, in a season where he lifted both the Superbike and Supersport crowns.
This year McCormack will have a Superbike Honda at his disposal, the same bike which he rode to the runner-up spot behind Marshall Neill in 2011. The bike has been extensively upgraded with the support of Tom Fitzsimons of VTL and Jim Halligan of JTecSports and the former champion is looking forward to battling for the title once again.
“I’m familiar with the Fireblade from 2011 and with the work we have done to it I can’t wait to get out there”, said McCormack as he looked forward to the new season. “My aim is to be the main Honda rider taking the battle to the Kawasaki’s, which seem to be taking over. With Derek Sheils, Damien Byrne, Cody Nally, and possibly Marshall Neill all out on ZX10′s it will be a huge challenge this year.”
To help his cause McCormack will have long term backers VTL on board once again along with JTecSports, Road Racing Ireland and Kavanagh Christmas Trees. Looking after his Superbike will be long standing mechanics Davy and Cathal who have worked with McCormack for a number of years including during his 2013 stint with the KMR team.

Kneen has previous Mondello Park experience, having won there in the Celtic Match races back in 2009, and is sure to put up a strong challenge to the series regulars.
Sweeney will race a 250CC two-stroke machine for BE Racing on the roads this season, but for Mondello Park he will ride his own Kawasaki, which will be run by John Burrows team for the weekend. The Prince’s Trust and six of Northern Ireland’s leading companies celebrated the mammoth achievement of collectively raising an impressive £70,660.50 for the charity through its Million Makers Challenge. All the funds raised will help turn around the lives of disadvantaged young people in Northern Ireland.
With the offer of seed funding from The Prince’s Trust, the seven finalists pitted their commercial and creative skills against each other to run the most profitable mini enterprise over the past six months.
Adelaide Insurance, Abbey Bond Lovis, Asidua Software Consultancy, Junior Chamber International, ShredBank, Ulster Bank and a team from The Prince’s Trust programme staff undertook a wide range of activities including organising boxing matches, pub quizzes, abseils and tea parties to maximise the funds donated to the charity.
Adelaide Insurance scooped the top prize raising an astonishing £17,699.80 through White Collar Boxing, a pub quiz, Christmas Jumper day and many more activities.
Sam Geddis, Director of Adelaide Insurance said,
“We brought together a team from our middle management to compete in the Million Maker’s Challenge. It was the perfect opportunity for the whole team to develop their skills and realise their potential in a simulated commercial environment. We had some pleasant surprises along the way with a few “dark horses” coming to the fore demonstrating newly acquired leadership and delegation skills. I am delighted with the outcome, for both The Prince’s Trust and our team members, 75% of whom secured promotions in their jobs over the course of the competition.”
Ian Jeffers, Director of The Prince’s Trust in Northern Ireland said,
“This year’s Million Makers teams have shown an extraordinary amount of creativity and tenacity to raise £70,000 in just six months. This challenge requires lots of enthusiasm and sheer determination which these companies have clearly demonstrated.
“Million Makers is one of many successful joint initiatives we have with the private sector. The importance of this joined-up working cannot be underestimated both in terms of the funds raised to support local disadvantaged young people but also by raising awareness of the many issues that our young people face in daily life.”
